The Center for Binational Institutions is devoted to promoting a better understanding of the bilateral institutions between Mexico and the United States. Our monthly newsletter presents the relevant events between US-MEXICO bilateral institutions.
1) 13th Meeting - 21st Century Border Management Process Executive Steering Committee (12.03.21) Learn more
Institutional context -The 21st Century Border Management Initiative is a bilateral cooperation mechanism, whose goal is to improve border security and promote the economic competitiveness of the North American region. It has held annual plenary meetings since the mechanism was launched in 2010.
13th Plenary Meeting of the 21st Century Border Management Process Executive Steering Committee - On December 3rd, 2021, the Head of the North American Unit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Roberto Velasco, and the Mexican Ambassador to the U.S., Esteban Moctezuma met virtually with the Special Assistant to the President of the United States, Katie Tobin, and the Ambassador of the United States to Mexico, Ken Salazar.
2) Mexico and the United States present a work plan derived from the HLED (12.13.21)
Institutional context - The High Level Economic Dialogue (HLED) focuses on advancing economic and trade priorities to promote economic growth, job creation, and global competitiveness for both nations.
HLED Work Plan - The work plan presented on December 13th, 2021, derived from the last meeting of the HLED held in Washington D.C., defines advances and specific strategic activities between both countries based on the four established pillars.
3) Mexico and the United States begin operations for the Bicentennial Understanding (12.14.21) Learn more
Institutional context - The Bicentennial Framework for Security establishes a long-term approach for binational actions to pursue the safety and security of both societies. The Framework comprises three goals: protecting people, preventing transborder crime, and pursuing criminal networks.
Mexico and the United States begin operations for the Bicentennial Framework - On December, 14th, 2021, the Mexican delegation led by Secretary Marcelo Ebrard and Secretary Rosa Icela Rodríguez met with the American delegation, led by Ambassador Ken Salazar and the Chargé d'Affaires for Mexico, Stephanie Syptak-Ramnath; to begin operations for the Bicentennial Framework.
4) First USMCA Deputies Meeting (12.01.22)
Institutional context - The United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) seeks to support mutually beneficial trade leading to freer markets, fairer trade, and robust economic growth in North America. The key issues it focuses on include Intellectual Property, Digital Trade, Financial Services, Environment, Agriculture, and Trade.
First USMCA Deputies Meeting - The First USMCA Deputies Meeting took place on January 12th, 2022. The discussions circled around four thematic issues: Labor; Environment; Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and Competitiveness; and State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) and Designated Monopolies.
5) U.S. Secretary of Energy visit to Mexico (20.01.22) Learn more
Institutional context - Energy cooperation among the United States and Mexico is long-standing, extensive, robust, and covers numerous areas of mutual interest. The Office of International Affairs leads initiatives between the U.S. Department of Energy and the Mexican Ministry of Energy on energy initiatives under the HLED.
U.S. Secretary of Energy visit to Mexico - On January, 20th, 2022, the Secretary of SENER, Rocío Nahle García, hosted her counterpart from the United States, Secretary Jennifer Granholm. During their meeting they discussed the energy policies of each country. Secretary Granholm also met with Mexican President López Obrador (AMLO) to discuss energy development issues in North America and the energy reform initiative promoted by the AMLO.
