THE CENTER FOR BINATIONAL INSTITUTIONS (CBI)

April 4, 2021

WHAT WE DO

Over the last decades, the ties between Mexico and the United States have become more interdependent, complex, and relevant for both nations, which has increased the reliance on institutions to maintain a stable, positive, and functional relationship. That is why the CBI focuses on strengthening and updating bilateral institutions.

WHERE WE COME FROM

In January 2020, twelve former Mexican and American ambassadors and experts came together in an event called Convocation to assess the current state of the U.S.-Mexico bilateral relationship. Their central recommendation was the need to improve and update some of the main existing dialogue and cooperation mechanisms.

The CBI is an initiative by the U.S.-Mexico Foundation, a binational nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering bilateral cooperation and understanding between the United States and Mexico.

OUR MISSION

To promote a better understanding of the bilateral institutions between Mexico and the United States.

OUR VALUES

The CBI recognizes cooperation as a tool to strengthen, share and accelerate the development of the bilateral relationship. It involves creating, adapting, transferring, and sharing knowledge to improve the relationship. Both nations have the right to mutual respect and recognition in the bilateral relationship, so they feel safe, heard, and valued in the exchange. In the same way, integrity is a central value for the CBI, we are committed to openness and transparency.

ADDED VALUE

What distinguishes the CBI from other organizations and programs that focus on the U.S.-Mexico relationship is its analysis of binational issues through institutions like agreements, organizations, dialogue mechanisms, and programs.
