First AMLO-Harris virtual meeting and official visit by Vice President Harris

Institutional context

Since the beginning of the Biden-Harris administration, on January 20, 2021, several meetings have been held between Mexico and the United States on different binational issues such as migration, security, and trade. On February 10th, the first meeting between Presidents López Obrador and Biden took place, and on March 20th, both presidents had a dialogue on migration.

The last visit to Mexico by an American Vice President took place in 2016, with former president Enrique Peña Nieto and former Vice President Joe Biden. During the Trump administration, Vice President Pence did not visit Mexico.

First AMLO-Harris 2021 meeting

Vice President Kamala Harris had a first virtual meeting with the Mexican president on May 7th, 2021 where the main topic discussed was migration. Vice President Harris will visit Mexico on June 7th of this year. This would be the first visit by an American Vice President to Mexico in five years.

Harris’ visit to Mexico

The visit by Vice President Harris took place on June 8th, 2021. During the visit, a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a strategic partnership for cooperation in the Northern Triangle was signed. The main themes addressed were the launching of a new high-level economic cooperation mechanism, investment, migration, regional economic competitiveness, and the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement. Furthermore, Vice President Harris met with women entrepreneurs and labor leaders.
