The Bureau of Consular Affairs (CA) is part of the U.S. Department of State, and is responsible for the welfare and protection of U.S. citizens abroad, the issuance of passports and other documentation for citizens and nationals, the protection of U.S. border security, and the facilitation of legitimate travel to the United States.

In February 2019, Ian G. Brownlee became the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Consular Affairs. The main functions of this position are policy coordination, management and operational activities of the Bureau and consular functions. The Mexican counterpart for the Bureau of Consular Affairs (CA) is the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs, and the Mexican representative of this secretariat is Marcelo Ebrard, Secretary of Foreign Affairs.

Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Consular Affairs’ visit to Mexico

Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs, Ian G. Brownlee, traveled to Nogales and Ciudad Juárez, Mexico; Tucson, Arizona; and El Paso, Texas, from July 19th-23rd. In Tucson and El Paso he oversaw the U.S. passport facility operations and met with staff. In Nogales and Ciudad Juárez, he oversaw the consular operations and met with consular staff.
