U.S. Legislators meet with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador
On March 13, 2023, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador met with U.S. legislators and representatives to discuss the fight against international supply chains of fentanyl and other chemical precursors. During the meeting, he emphasized the importance of working in coordination and with respect for the sovereignty of each country. He also reaffirmed the importance of economic integration in the North American region.
In response to the meeting, Ambassador Ken Salazar commented, “For me, the most fundamental thing in these exchanges we have is that the United States and Mexico are partners forever. That's why we carry on with this fight...we are united by geography, our people, our economies, and always fighting for the well-being of the people of the United States and Mexico, knowing that here in North America is where the world's greatest power is to ensure that all humans can have opportunities and equality, everything that President Biden, President López Obrador, are fighting for.”
Mexican attendees were Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador; Secretary of Economy, Raquel Buenrostro Sánchez; the Undersecretary of Finance and Public Credit, Gabriel Yorio González; and the Chief of the North America Unit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Roberto Velasco Álvarez.
From the United States, Ambassador to Mexico Ken Salazar, as well as Democratic congressmen Terri Sewell (Alabama) and Jimmy Panetta (California), and several other public servants including Republican congressmen Beth Van Duyne (Texas), Carol Miller (West Virginia), Michelle Fischbach (Minnesota), Mike Carey (Ohio), and Kelly Armstrong (North Dakota), were in attendance.
