Institutional Context
The United States Special Presidential Envoy for Climate is a position in the Executive Office of the United States President with authority over energy policy and climate policy within the executive branch. This position is currently held by John Kerry. Kerry, visited Mexico City and Palenque in October 2021, at the invitation of Mexican President López Obrador, as part of his proposal to bring the programs "Sembrando Oportunidades" and "Jóvenes Construyendo el Futuro" to Central America.
U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate visit to Mexico*
On February 9, 2022, the U.S. Presidential Special Envoy for Climate, John Kerry, visited Mexico City to meet with President López Obrador, Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard and other high-level officials of the Mexican government. The U.S. delegation held meetings at the Foreign Ministry and the National Palace. This meeting follows up on the ongoing diplomatic dialogue that positions the fight against climate change as one of the foreign policy priorities for the North American region.
On the work agenda, the delegations plan to find areas to promote regional cooperation; accelerate the deployment of renewable energies; advance in the implementation of nature-based solutions programs such as “Sembrando Vida”; control and reduce pollution caused by methane gas emissions; collaborate in the transition towards sustainable electric transportation; consolidate Mexico's interest in positioning itself as the focal point for the supply of solar panels in the North American market; and advance programs to combat deforestation.
